What is Custom domain?

With the Custom domain feature, you can use your own custom domain names for links inside emails and SMS.

Your Custom domain is presented to your Profiles in email clients as well as the browser address bars. Different domain names on the account, Section and Folder level are supported.

The look of the URL

Let's take email links as an example. By default we use our own domain name, so in the emails your Profiles will see the URLs looks like this:

https://tr.aonetrk.com/c/owSY9SzA7IoD7

With Custom domain it is possible to turn these URLs into something more legible:

https://promotions.heartland.one/c/owSY9SzA7IoD7

For the web version and landing pages, the URL with your Custom domain name is also presented in the browser address bar.

Options of Custom domain setup

As a reminder, your account contains Sections, and Sections contain Folders.

1. One Domain name for the whole Account

In the simplest scenario a single, account-wide domain name is configured. Let's say it's "marketing.heartland.one". All emails and SMS will use it.

2. Different domain names per Section

Now, if you leverage Sections, different domain names can be set up for different Sections. You can chose to have a custom domain on one, several or all Sections.

For example, if "europe.heartland.one" domain name is configured on a specific Section then all emails and SMS in that Section will contain this domain name in the links.

Sections without any specific domain name configured will fall back to the domain name configured on the account level, "heartland.one". If a custom domain name is not configured on the account level our own domain name, "tr.aonetrk.com", will be used.

3. Different Domain names per Folder

Finally you are also able to configure different domain names for your Folder. The rules here are very similar to the ones used for Sections. If a Folder does not have any custom domain name configured then we fall back to the parent Section and then to the account.

Ownership infrastructure

We support the following ownership model for the key infrastructure components required by the Custom domain feature.

DNS Records

You, our customer, own the DNS records for your custom domains and add the CNAME records to alias the technical domain name we provide you with.

SSL Certificates

We own the SSL certificates including their creation, configuration and renewal. To allow our infrastructure to validate these certificates, you add the CNAME records we provide you with in the above DNS.

Custom domain onboarding

You can request the Custom Domain feature from the Account settings. Once we receive your request, we will talk to you to agree on the details.

This allows us to start the process of setting up the required infrastructure and configuration. After this is complete, we will get back to you for a final confirmation before enabling the feature.

The following sections describe this process in more detail.

  1. Click your profile icon and go to Account settings.

  2. Go to Custom Domain in the left menu.

Request Custom domain

Start the request by clicking Request in the top right corner.

When requesting Custom Domain, provide your custom domain names and describe how you want to use them.

For each domain name, tell us if you want to apply it to the whole account, some specific Section(s) or just a couple of Folders.

Agree on the Details

Once we receive your request, we will contact you in order to understand your use cases and answer your questions. This allows us to initiate the infrastructure configuration process.

Integrate infrastructure

As soon as were ready, we reach out to you with the CNAME records you need to add to your DNS in order for the specific domain name to hit our servers and for the SSL certificates to get validated.

Activate

When we complete the whole setup we contact you to confirm were ready to activate the Custom Domain settings according to the details agreed on previously. With your approval we enable it, and from then the links in the emails you send will contain your custom domains.
