What are Data Tags?

Data Tags are personalised tags that are based on information about the Profiles stored in your APSIS One account.

They're great for personalising email or SMS communications with your recipients, and to create a more targeted marketing campaign.

Including Data Tags in your communications is simple, and once the message is sent, APSIS One will dynamically change each tag to display information that's relevant to each recipient. As your recipient will receive a message that's specifically tailored to them and their interests, you can sit back and watch your open rate and click through rate increase!

So if you want to personalise an email's subject line or opening paragraph with a recipient's first name, or perhaps target a customer who hasn't yet completed their purchase of a fast-selling pair of shoes, Data Tags are a simple and effective way to achieve your goal.

APSIS One supports several kinds of Data Tags:

  • Default: APSIS One's default Attributes, like first name, last name, etc.

  • Custom: These are Attributes created in your individual Section in Account Settings.

  • System: Attributes generated for each activity. Currently we have time sent as a system Attribute, supporting Unix timestamps and ISO-8601 date formats.

  • Integrations: Create a Data Tag from the Attributes in your CRM Integration, like Magento Attributes.

Data Tags and Assets

Data Tags normally appear like this in the Email Editor:

Data Tags correspond with Attributes in your Section's Data Model.

While each Section's Attributes are independent from each other, and available only when working in a specific Section, Assets are available account-wide.

Assets are created either by saving a Row or creating an Asset from the Email tool's Activity Page.

If an Asset is created with Data Tags, they will work only for sendings made within the Section the Asset was created in (and to which the Attributes related to the Data Tags correspond).

The only exception is the case in which the Data Tag corresponds with a Default Attribute (not Custom) like First Name, provided that the recipient Profile(s) have a value for said Attribute.

So, if an Asset is created in one Section and used in an Email tool activity in another Section, the Data Tags in that Asset will be ignored. You'll notice these Data Tags look different in the Email Editor when adding the Asset:

How to Use Data Tags

1. If you're working in the Email tool, simply add an Element to enter your text. In the SMS tool, proceed within the SMS content step to write your message's content.

2. While in the SMS content step, type ## and select a Data Tag from the list.

If you're working from the Email Editor, expand the Data Tags drop down in the Inline Text Editor and select which Attribute you would like to include.

3. Once added, your Data tag will be shown inside a round container, but it will be replaced with the value of the Attribute when the email or SMS message is sent.

Data Tags in HTML Element

Data Tags can be created directly in the code using a HTML Element.

First, you need to obtain the Attribute's ID. You can find this in the Data Model of the Section you're working in.

Under Attributes in the top menu, select which Attribute you want to work with by clicking on the pencil icon. Here you can see the Attribute ID.

Add a HTML Element to your email.

To include the Attribute as a Data Tag, enter two hash symbols (##), followed by the Attribute ID, followed by two more hash symbols.

Event Data Tags

You can personalise your Marketing Automation tool activities by creating an Email that contains Data Tags related to the Event chosen in the Listen Node.

This is useful for when you want to send an Email to a recipient based on a product they have purchased from your store, or perhaps you want to remind them of the product they left in their cart before completing their purchase.

1. In the Marking Automation Tool, open the Flow Canvas and click Edit on the Listen Node.

2. Click Events in the left-side menu, and from the icons select what kind of Events you want to listen for.

3. Expand the Event dropdown menu, and choose an Event you want the Listen Node to listen for, and click Save.

4. Click on the + icon at the bottom of the Listen Node, and choose an Email node.

5. Click Create to start working on your email. Add or edit an Element!

6. Expand the Data Tags drop down in the Inline Text Editor and select which Event data you would like to include.

A list of Event data associated with the Event from the Listen Node will show. Select an Event to use it as a Data Tag!
